‘The Rite Journey’ Transforms Students at Atelier 21

The Rite Journey, a transformative program originating 26 years ago in Australia, has made its mark in the UK, and Atelier 21 proudly stands as one of the flagship schools to embrace this impactful program. Watch our video HERE

The Rite Journey is an innovative wellbeing program, conducted weekly, guiding pupils through the tumultuous journey of adolescence into young adulthood. Since September, our Year 9 pupils have embarked on a path of self-discovery and growth.

In traditional cultures, the transition to adulthood was marked by guidance, mentorship and dialogue with elders. Today, such rites of passage are rare, leaving many youths to navigate this crucial phase without adequate support. The Rite Journey seeks to fill this gap, empowering students to become more confident and resilient individuals.

Our Year 9 students experienced an unforgettable moment at the “Calling” opening ceremony. Amidst the tranquility of our local campsite, they penned heartfelt gratitude letters to their parents, saving them for a poignant later moment. The parents and their children also made pledges to each other.

During the “Letting Go” ceremony, students wrote down childish behaviours they aimed to shed on their journey to adulthood, watching as their notes were symbolically consumed by the campfire’s flames. Amidst the crackle of burning paper, they savoured toasted marshmallows, adding a sprinkle of magic to the evening. The appearance of a curious fallow deer nearby elicited gasps of awe and wonder from our pupils, enhancing the mystical ambiance.

The pupils have absorbed invaluable lessons from the program, eagerly anticipating the culmination at an overnight camp this summer. Through The Rite Journey, they’ve not only learned about their own values and opinions on ethical topics but also honed vital skills such as collaboration, risk taking and teamwork.

Stay tuned as we continue to unveil the details of this extraordinary journey throughout the year. Together, we’re sculpting a brighter future for our Year 9 students.
